Harvest Festival

The Wimbledon Guild has supported the tradition of the Harvest Festival in the local community for many years, to ensure people who are in desperate need of the most basic items receive them, particularly in the lead-up to the colder months.

Traditionally fresh food and produce was collected to give to people in need. It is now more common for non-perishable goods to be the focus for collection, so that more items can be provided to support a wider range of organisations and people in the local area.

Schools in Wimbledon the surrounding area are the main supporters of the collection, together with churches.

It is a good opportunity for children to have some understanding of the needs of people living in the community who are less fortunate than themselves. We are delighted to be supported by so many different organisations and the collection has become extremely successful.

In 2009,
we have collected and distributed
over 10,000 tonnes of goods.

What do we collect?
Tinned and dried food, cleaning products, general household goods and
especially things for women with young babies.

When do we need it?
The collection and deliveries all happen in the month of October each year.

Where does it go?
The donated food and other practical supplies are taken to our store-rooms in central Wimbledon. They are carefully checked for sell-by dates, contents which might be problematical for people with dietary restrictions etc. They are then distributed in the Borough of Merton to individuals and centres with whom we have close links. They are mainly elderly people, and places like women’s refuges.
