In 1907, the Mayor of Wimbledon presided over a meeting to amalgamate the then existing voluntary charities with the result that the Wimbledon Guild of Social Welfare was formed. From 1918 until quite recently, the Mayor of Wimbledon and then of Merton was also President of the Wimbledon Guild.

One of Alderman and Mrs. Black's afternoon concerts at Wimbledon town Hall - 20th December 1949

Organised by a Mrs. Rawlins. The tickets were distributed by the Wimbledon Guild, together with concessionary cinema and football match tickets.

In responding to the needs of the people in the Borough, the Guild has, through its innovative work, given birth to several other organisations. In 1920 the Wimbledon Public Utility Society (later to be named Wimbledon Housing Association) was formed to provide low cost housing to those in need. In 1992 the W.H.A. disbanded and the housing stock was donated to the Guild.

In 1927 the Guild was influential in the passing of an Act of Parliament, which stipulated the standards of Residential Care.

Enjoying the sunshine at the old Guild House in the 50s/early 60s on the lawn which is now, unfortunately, a very necessary car park.
