New Look for Mitcham Charity Shop

Gill Caney has hit the Wimbledon Guild’s charity shop like a whirlwind, changing the layout, adding colour and freshness to the displays, and making it a welcoming place for local people to come for a chat and a bargain. ‘We’re making it smile!’ she says. ‘We have a box of sweets behind the counter and couple of chairs here, because some of our customers like a little sit-down – we don’t rush them. But everyone goes away with something good, and it all goes to the charity right here in the Borough.’

New staff member at Wimbledon Guild Activity & Social Centre

Rachel Simon is now working 5 days a week in Guild House. Rachel is a former nursery teacher, and has been volunteering at the Activity & Social Centre since September 2007. ‘I’m a Jack of all trades’, says Rachel ‘- whatever needs to be done, I’ll do it!’ Rachel lives alone, and recently had a serious depression. ‘I think it really helps to understand what some of the elderly people who visit are experiencing.

Lavender and Lilac Week
14th-18th April

Lorna Cohen has decreed that the week beginning 14th April will be Lavender and Lilac week at the Wimbledon Guild. Lovely scents will waft through the building, the Social and Activity Centre will be draped in tasteful fabrics, and the strains of ‘We’ll Gather Lilacs’ will drift gently down the corridors.

First Service

First Service is one of the Wimbledon Guild’s newest initiatives, offering a ‘one-stop shop’ for anyone in the area at a loss for how to tackle a problem – no matter how big or how small. At the last count First Service had responded to 68 requests for advice or signposting to other agencies and given ‘hands on’ assistance in 27 instances.

Drake House Club
Joseph came to Drake House - almost

Adam Pearce, who plays the baker and Issachar, one of Joseph’s brothers in ‘Joseph’ at the Adelphi Theatre on the Strand, came to Drake House Club at the end of February. 60 people watched, listened and loved him. Regular members were joined by clients and staff from the Activity & Social Centre and some members of the Guild House Club.
