My volunteer story - Salma

To celebrate Volunteers' Week one of our volunteer befrienders shares her story

I like to help others - it makes me happy too. It also makes me appreciate life more, seeing the difficulties others overcome daily.

I enjoyed making a difference to my client’s life. All she needed was good support and someone to listen as she was so lonely. By listening and understanding her needs I could see her face light up. She told me it made such a difference for an outsider to help.

During our time together we’d go for a little walk, stop for a coffee and sometimes browse in the shops. That's all she needed. I’d also help her with shopping and a little cooking. She’d make me laugh with her humour.

On one occasion I took her for pedicure and manicure - she was over the moon. She said she felt like a princess!

Sadly, she passed away a few months ago.  She’s sorely missed - I gained and sadly lost a friend too early.

Thank you Salma! All this week we're celebrating Volunteers' Week (1st-7th June) by sharing stories from some of our wonderful volunteers so do check back for more!

Help us make sure that no one in Merton has to face life's challenges alone
