Family therapy

Our family therapists work with family members who want to improve relationships with each other.

We can see families or parts of families, couples who have children, step families and extended families.

We have three clinics across the week (Tuesday evening, Thursday afternoon and Saturday morning), work in teams of therapists and offer up to 12 fortnightly sessions. Our approach is to work systemically as a team.

Family therapy can help with a wide range of issues including:

  • Family communication problems
  • Life Cycle transitions such as adolescence, divorce, bereavement and retirement
  • Fostering, adoption and kinship care
  • Mental health, trauma or addiction problems
  • Illness and disability in the family

We encourage family members to listen to different perspectives, views and stories and explore, together, possible ways forward. It helps to think about family relationships and encourage new ways of relating to other people, as well as practice new ways of communicating. Often, we agree on tasks relating to new ways of thinking and behaving to try out between sessions. We can see people on their own, together with family members or other important people can be brought along to sessions.
